The Last Supper
Re-materialising break-up text

This is an experimental project created part of my master's studies at UAL, where we have re-materialised the experience of breakup texting. The modern-day breakup has been dematerialised into a flat, pixelised mobile phone experience, making the breakup feel often one-sided, lacking effort and lack of closure. We saw this an opportunity to create something physical, tactile and experiential.

❀ Design and make a new form for a dematerialised artefact.

Solution

❀ A breakup kit that follows the experiences of a dinner, complete with a menu, utensils, and other items that forms a new experience of a break-up, easing pain points that break-up texting often lacks.

Utensils and plate notepad is provided to let you digest your thoughts during the conversations, to communicate honestly, but mindfully and with clarity.

03.

Set the Bill

Did sharing this meal whet your appetite for ending the relationship? Then it's time to make a decision and settle the bill.

04.

Return Form

One last bite, savour the flavour of reclaiming what's rightfully yours, fill out the request form to order the return of your be-longings. Slide the form back into the check holder.

05.

Split the Bill?

If you decide to go dutch, split the table cloth right down the middle and go your separate ways with a piece each. Otherwise, keep it in one piece and see what delicious courses your future holds.

Research & Development

Body Mapping Research

Body Mapping Research on
the Break-up Experience

We surveyed participants of different ages, genders, and backgrounds, asking them to depict and describe the sensations they experienced when receiving a break-up text. The observations were intriguing as we observed recurring themes across various areas of their bodies.

Primary Research

Collecting Break-up Messages

Researching through instagram account and Hinge has been enjoyable. We asked people to share break-up texts with us, either ones they had sent in the past or hypothetical ones created on the spot. Our intention was to study the use of language in these texts.

Research Synthesis

Design Synthesis: Gains and Loses

As a final step of our breakup text dissection process we conducted a gains and losses exercise, to situate the isolated micro-interaction that is the breakup text within the wider context of a breakup.
